We began Season 2 of SYC with 4 packed days of staff training. Our talented and enthusiastic team spent the week getting to know each other, learning about the foundations of camp, and preparing for the arrival of campers. The staff members helped set a vision for camp where everyone feels included, safe, and supported. The campers may not believe it, but we put staff through the very same team-building exercises that help our kids bond in their camp crews. Each game the counselors introduce to their crews must first be tried out by our staff members!

On Monday, the campers took over camp! Counselors waited at the gate to greet each child upon arrival. Campers spent the week exploring activities such as basketball, baseball, volleyball, pillow making, nature explorers, picture frame building, board games, and friendship bracelets.
Meet The Camp Crews
The Crazy Purple Minions
Our youngest group of campers have renamed themselves "The Crazy Purple Minions." This crew has bonded over both quiet and loud moments. While The Crazy Purple Minions live up to their name with wild and silly games and songs, they can also be found enjoying each other in quiet moments of reflection and creativity. In the photo to the right, you can see several Crazy Purple Minions reflecting on their day before lunch.
Raptor Hawk Hot Pants
Our middle crew have already found their groove with each other, creating a new team name, a crew cheer, and a group flag. These campers have been working on making everyone feel welcome by including all their team members in challenges and jokes. On one camper from Raptor Hawk Hot Pants' very first day of camp, she felt comfortable enough to give a "shout out" to the whole camp, thanking everyone for embracing her into the camp community. There is no doubt that the kids from Raptor Hawk Hot Pants give each other confidence. To the left, you can see members of the crew supporting each other in a team building challenge.
Our oldest campers have set an incredible example around camp. The members of this crew make it a point to be caring and kind. When there is a disagreement in their crew, these campers talk it out to find a solution. After just a week of camp, they have impressed everyone with their ability to collaborate and innovate. As camp progresses, these campers will take on more and more responsibilities around camp. Look for stories of their leadership in future blogs! To the right, you can see Mega Zanana attempting the same shrinking blanket challenge as the counselors tried in staff training. Mega Zanana crew members took off their shoes to make more space on the blanket! Clever campers!
Week one of camp was filled to the brim with excitement. We are looking forward to all the adventures that this summer will bring. Check back soon to see more pictures and read tales from daily camp life! Thank you to all the donors who have brought this magical camp back into being for another season. This wouldn't happen without you!
